While river tubing, you ride down high-speed rapids in your own personal tube. The tubes are heavy duty and made out of the same materials as whitewater rafts.

Before you book, if you’re thinking you are just going to float down a river with a cocktail, this is not the tour for you.

The activity requires a good amount of paddling and is total body workout.

But when your adrenaline is pumping as you’re flying down the river in one of the most beautiful countries in the world… you might not even notice.

Arenal River Tubing was a definite highlight during my trip to Costa Rica. I recommend it to anyone looking for a rush.

Arenal River Tubing Tour

Before the tour, you are fitted with a vest, helmet and tube. The tour guides provide safety guidelines and demonstrate the correct ways to paddle and maneuver your tube.

Once everyone feels comfortable, you grab your tube and the tour begins.

The views during the river tubing trip are absolutely incredible.

Lush vibrant green trees and plants line the side of the river. You can even see sloths and a variety of birds in the nearby trees.

River Tubing Guides

On our trip, there were three tour guides in kayaks helping everyone down the rapids.

They were there to make sure that everyone didn’t go down sketchy parts of the river or make any wrong turns.

For a couple of the rapids, the guides had everyone in the group hold onto a rope to get us through safely.

The guides are extremely experienced and I felt safe the entire time.

Quick Break on the Riverbank

About half-way through the trip, your group stops on the side of the river for a quick break.

The guides provide fresh tropical fruit and cookies to everyone in your tour. The mangos and pineapples I couldn’t get enough of.

Finishing River Tubing

After the break, you get back into the water and finish the second half of the tour.

There were even more rapids in the second half of the tour that definitely had my heart racing!

Once you finish, the bus picks you up and takes you back to the meeting place or your hotel.

If you have a great time – don’t forget to tip your tour guides!
